As part of its resolve to fight the epidemic of hunger, the Hope and Action Foundation distributed 100 food packets to the needy in a slum of Noida on 26th March 2025. Since its foundation in 2021, the organisation has organised food distribution drives every year at different locations in Delhi NCR. In 2021 it was organised in Okhla Vihar, in 2022 in Hauz Khas, in 2023 in Batla House, and in 2024 in north-east Delhi. These packages include rations needed on a daily basis, such as wheat, rice, vegetable oils, and so on. Each packet feeds a family of 4 or 5 for approximately a month.
It is estimated, that nearly 1 in 11 people around the world go to bed hungry each night. Globally, 11 people are likely dying every minute from acute hunger, now outpacing COVID-19 fatalities. In India, the reasons for hunger range from poverty, to climate change, to food wastage. “While the government is doing its part to decrease the percentage of people who go to bed hungry each night, we as responsible citizens should also do our bit,” said M Behzad Fatmi, Secretary-General of Hope and Action Foundation.
Most part of the food distribution drive was crowd funded by Zakat donations, a charity that is obligatory for Muslims during the month of Ramadan.
The Hope and Action Foundation, affiliated with the transnational civil society organisation Hizmet Movement, is inspired by the teachings and ideas of the Islamic scholar and thinker M Fethullah Gülen. Following the core values of the movement, Hizmet volunteers view service to humanity as both a social responsibility and a spiritual practice.
