The Hope and Action Foundation distributed food packets to 100 needy individuals in New Delhi on April 28, 2022. This initiative, facilitated by a South Delhi Municipal Corporation school in the Hauz Khas neighborhood, provided essential rations such as wheat, rice, spices and vegetable oils.
Context and Significance
Hunger and malnutrition remain significant socio-economic challenges in India. According to the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India ranked 111th out of 125 countries, trailing behind neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. India’s score of 28.7 reflects a serious level of hunger. The Indian Government’s National Family Health Survey 5 (2019-2021) reported alarming statistics: 35% of children under five were stunted, 32% were underweight, and 57% of women of menstruating age, along with 67% of children, suffered from anaemia due to malnutrition.
The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization’s 2023 report on the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World indicated that 74% of Indians were unable to afford a healthy diet in 2021, an increase from 70% in the previous year. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, further straining the livelihoods of those living below the poverty line.
